Ideal Growing Conditions

At 1,400 feet on the Westside of Paso Robles, our 12-acre hillside vineyard thrives in lean, calcareous soils, perfect for low-yield, high-quality fruit. We dry farm and follow sustainable practices.

In addition to Bordeaux varietals, we’ve recently planted Pinot Noir on a hilltop near the family home, taking advantage of the site’s diverse microclimates.

Annual production is limited to 2,600–3,000 cases, crafted using traditional methods: small-lot fermentation, hand punch-downs, and barrel aging.

Since earning our first gold medal in 1996, our wines continue to gain recognition for their elegance and depth.

Realizing the Dream

Bob Dunning’s passion for wine began while traveling through California’s wine regions. After acquiring the Paso Robles property in the 1980s, the family launched their first vintage in 1991.

Bob began by sourcing Chardonnay from James Berry in 1986, eventually planting his own vineyard using Berry’s cuttings.

The goal was clear: to craft estate-grown, estate-bottled wines.

Over time, the vineyard expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Zinfandel and Rhône-style blends added from select sourced fruit.

The Art of Winemaking

SMALL-LOT WINEMAKING ROOTED IN TRADITION

At Dunning Estate, winemaking is an intentional, hands-on craft. Each lot is fermented separately in small open-top vessels, allowing close attention to detail during every stage. Red wines are gently punched down by hand to enhance structure and preserve delicate aromatics, capturing the essence of the fruit without overworking it.

White wines are fermented in French oak barrels to develop layered textures and subtle complexity. We take a minimalist approach, using native yeasts when possible and carefully guiding each fermentation at cool temperatures to preserve character and balance.

Aging takes place in carefully selected French oak barrels, with a thoughtful mix of new and neutral wood to support the wine’s natural depth. Every step, from fermentation to blending, is guided by experience and feel, producing wines that are focused, elegant, and unmistakably Dunning.

A True Family Winery

At Dunning Estate, family isn’t just behind the scenes, it’s at the heart of everything we do. Bob and Jo-Ann Dunning are often in the tasting room, pouring wines and welcoming guests.

Their son Garrett manages the wine club and is stepping deeper into the family business. You’ll also find extended family pitching in during events or helping out in the tasting room.

Don’t be surprised if Penny, the family’s golden retriever, stops by to say hello!
